A promotional item for Veikko Kähkönen
Awards: Tokyo TDC
Veikko Kähkönen, a Finnish photographer, was tasked with designing a promotional object for his clients. It had to include some of his personal work and be transformed from a conventional notebook into a more intriguing and compelling object that would captivate the audience and stay on the desktops in creative agencies. The notebook needed to come across not as a portfolio but as an artistic object and introduction to Veikko Kähkönen’s work.
An unconventional approach was taken to achieve this by hiding the photographs behind a “veil” using slightly transparent paper and a Japanese binding method. Each spread holds a hidden secret behind the pages that can be discovered while the book retains its functionality.
In addition to the images, the typography used was manipulated and stylized to depict some of Veikko Kähkönen’s clients, giving a pleasant rhythm to the layout. The typography functions as a break element in contrast with the soft photographs. This notebook can be summed up as an intriguing appetizer of the photographer’s work.
