The Moomin picture books are classics in Finland as well as around the world. The books have a sense of adventure, warmth and joy that are topped with the beautifully handwritten texts by Tove Jansson.
We have been working with the Moomin brand for a number of years developing new tools and guidelines to further strengthen the brand. At the end of 2017 we set out to create a script style font that would be based on Tove’s handwriting for the Moomin picture books, The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My (1952) and Who will comfort Toffle? (1960).
Emil Bertell, a specialist in script type, was approached to create the typeface. The art direction of the project was handled by us. The project began at the end of 2017 and was finished four months later in April 2018 resulting in a font named Tove Script.
The ligatures, alternate characters and capitals that give the original handwriting its personality were studied closely. After collecting enough information Emil started working on the actual typeface. It was clear from the beginning that the intention was not to recreate the handwriting, but instead to create a new unified and legible script that could be used in a variety of different Moomin related applications.
Thanks to Emil Bertell’s massive effort in creating a multitude of ligatures and alternate characters the script works well in all possible scenarios. The typeface has a latin extended character set.
The font is available for all the Moomin licensees around the world.
